Social
Media
Social media is a group of Internet-based applications that allow
the creation and exchange of user-generated content." -
Wikipedia
The 'Internet-based applications' they are talking about are Twitter,
Facebook, MySpace,
YouTube, Linkedin,
Foursquare, Twitpic
and more.
However, one very important thing should be understood about Social
Media - it is there to help you drive traffic to your website and
it is rarely succesful as a stand alone service. That means your website
has to be 'up to scratch' as well. But that's another subject.
However, many, many people I know who are 'in the know' are saying
that Social Media is the future. So let's do it right.
Twitter
* To send a tweet out to everyone, you just type in the message in
your browser, or on your mobile phone, or on a API (Application or
Software)
* To send a tweet to the attention of a particular person, and still
make it public, you put at the beginning of the message their address;
ie: @QLDWhitsundays.
* To send a tweet to a particular group monitoring a subject (like
Q&A), you end your message with #subject (#qanda).
* You can also DM (Direct Message) tweets privately to individuals
only.
Your Twitter messages (Tweets) are received (or stored) by people
(or services) who:
* Follow you
* Follow the #subject
* RT'ed (forwarded) by someone else
* Google and other monitoring services.
Most genuine Twitter users have two types of people they follow -
their work group and their friends group.
Work Group may consist of friends within the same business and/or
trade, associates and competitors;
Friends Group may consist of old & new mates, suppliers, travel,
news, specials etc . . .
However, if you start a Twitter account, don't expect miracles overnight
- you need good, genuine followers, because you are delivering a good,
genuine product and/or service.
* Never pay for extra followers
* Follower others that have influence
* Always give credit - refer where you got your info
* Help a mate out - RT a tweet now amnd then.
* In most cases, it is common courtesy to follow those that follow
you . . . however, there are those that you would prefer not to follow.
Regularly review your followers list.
